Elected: December 2017, see BZN 75: 4.
Shane’s research interests are primarily in the systematics of marine and freshwater malacostracan crustaceans, on which he has published extensively over the last 20 years, investigating all parts of the phylogenetic system. With about 250 publications to date, studies span alpha-taxonomy of extant and fossil species to high level phylogenetics using morphological and molecular data. Other research interests include aquatic biogeography and biological invasions.
Summary of Research & Education:
Shane was awarded his Ph.D. in 2000 by the University of New South Wales, Australia. Thereafter, he held an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Australian Museum, Sydney, and, in 2006, joined the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Wellington, New Zealand, where he managed the Marine Biodiversity and Biosecurity Group and Marine Invasives Taxonomic Service. In 2010, Shane joined the Australian Museum where he is a Principal Research Scientist and Manager of Marine Invertebrates. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales and a Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Shane currently serves on the Steering Committee of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), the Council of the Society of Australian Systematic Biologists, and is an associate editor of several international journals and a Past President of The Crustacean Society.
