Names and Works placed on the Official Lists and Indexes in Volumes 58-62 (for 2001-2005) of the Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature.

Between 2001 and 2006, a further 1085 names and works have been placed on the Official Lists and Indexes, and 26 names already on the Lists & Indexes have been emended. Details of names and works placed on and amendments to the Lists and Indexes are given below.

Details of how to obtain the two published volumes are given in the Official Lists & Indexes order form on this website. These two volumes are also available as pdf files. Together with the entries below, these books give details of all names and works that the Commission has ever placed on the Official Lists & Indexes up to 2006.

Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, É. 1803. Catalogue des mammifères du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, confirmed as available for nomenclatural purposes (Mammalia). Op. 2005

Lacepède, B.G.É. de la V. 1788. Histoire Naturelle de Quadrupèdes Ovipares, and all subsequent editions of this work ruled to be not available for nomenclatural purposes, and no name to acquire the status of availability by reason of having been published in any edition. Op. 2104

Placed on Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Generic Names in Opinion 382 (January 1956), which recorded it to be a junior objective synonym of Heliconius Kluk 1802. Entry emended to record that the date of publication of Heliconius Kluk was 1780 and not 1802 (Lepidoptera). Op. 2152

charithonia, Papilio, Linnaeus, 1767, Systema Naturae, Ed. 12, vol. 1, p. 757. Placed on Official List of Specific Names in Opinion 382 (January 1956), which recorded it to be the type species of Heliconius Kluk 1802. Entry emended to record that it is the type species of Heliconius Kluk, 1780 and not 1802 (Lepidoptera). Op. 2152

clypeatus, Pagurus, Fabricius, 1787, Mantissa Insectorum, vol. 1, p. 328. Placed on Official List of Specific Names in Opinion 1575 (March 1990). Name as defined by the neotype (male specimen USNM 126773 in the United States National Museum, Washington) designated under the plenary power (Decapoda). Op. 2052

Crioceris Geoffroy, 1762, Histoire abrégée des insectes qui se trouvent aux environs de Paris, vol. 1, p. 237, Placed on Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Generic Names in Opinion 908 (June 1970), which recorded the gender as masculine. Entry on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology emended to record that the gender is feminine following the ruling that the gender of generic names in the family CHRYSOMELIDAE ending with the suffix –ceris is feminine (Coleoptera). Op. 2159

Didelphis Linnaeus, 1758, Systema Naturae, Ed. 10, vol. 1, pp. 54–55. Placed on Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Generic Names in Opinion 91, Direction 24, which recorded the gender as masculine. Entry on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology emended to record that the gender is corrected from masculine to feminine (Mammalia). Op. 2164

dolichopodidae Latreille, 1809, Genera crustaceorum et insectorum secundum ordinem naturalem in familias disposita . . ., vol. 4, pp. 239, 290. Placed on the Official List of Family-Group Names in Direction 49 (November 1956), recording Loew (1862) as the first author to publish the name in the correct form. This entry emended to record that it was first published in the correct form by Agassiz, Nomenclatoris zoologici index universalis . . . (1846, p. 128) (Diptera). Op. 1998

equina, Antilope, É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1803, Catalogue des mammifères du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, p. 259. Placed on Official List of Specific Names in Direction 23 (November 1955) with authorship and date Desmarest (1804). Entry on Official List emended to record the authorship and date as É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1803) and that it is the specific name of the type species of Hippotragus Sundevall, 1845 (Mammalia). Op. 2030

Eristalis Latreille, 1804, Nouveau dictionnaire d’histoire naturelle, 24 (sect. 3), p. 194. Placed on Official List of Specific Names in Opinion 1747 (September 1993), which recorded the gender as masculine. Entry on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology emended under the plenary power to record that the gender is feminine (Diptera). Op. 2153

gaurus, Bos, Smith, 1827, The Ruminantia. Vol. 4 in Griffith, Smith & Pidgeon (Eds.), The animal kingdom arranged in conformity with its organisation, by the Baron Cuvier, with additional descriptions of all the species hitherto named, and of many not before noticed, p. 399. Placed on the Official List of Specific Names in Opinion 1348 (September 1985). Ruled under the plenary power to be not invalid by reason of being pre-dated by a name based on a domestic form (Mammalia). Op. 2027

geniculata, Musca, De Geer, 1776, Mémoires pour servir à 1’histoire des insectes, vol. 6, p. 38 (Diptera). Placed on the Official List of Specific Names in Opinion 1008 (June 1974). To this entry is added an endorsement that the species is defined by the neotype (male specimen labelled ‘Sk. Dalby, O. Molla, 21.VIL1989, leg. R. Danielsson’ collected in Sweden and kept in the Museum of Zoology, Lund University) designated under the plenary power (Diptera). Op. 1975

Lilioceris Reitter, 1912, Fauna Germanica, 4: 79. Placed on Official List of Specific Names in Opinions 908 which recorded Lilioceris Reitter, 1912 (gender: masculine), type species by designation of Chûjô, 1951, Attelabus lilii Scopoli, 1763 and and Opinion 1130 which corrected this, recording, type species, by subsequent designation by Heinze, 1937, Chrysomela merdigera Linnaeus, 1758. Entry on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology emended to record that the gender is feminine following the ruling that the gender of generic names in the family CHRYSOMELIDAE ending with the suffix –ceris is feminine (type species, by subsequent designation by Heinze, 1937 (Bull. Nymphula Schrank, 1802, Fauna Boica, vol. 2, part 2, p. 162. Placed on the Official List of Generic Names in Opinion 1406 (October 1986). Entry emended to record that it is the type genus of NYMPHULINAE Duponchel, 1845 (Lepidoptera). Op. 2021

orientalis, Scyllarus, Lund, 1793, Skrifter af Naturhistorie-Selskabet. Kiøbenhavn, 2(2): 22. Placed on the Official List of Specific Names in Opinion 519 (August 1958). Entry on Official List emended to record that the species is defined by the neotype (female specimen from Padang, Sumatra, Indonesia, no. ZRC-1999.0481 in the Zoological Reference Collection, National University of Singapore) designated under the plenary power, and by the deletion that it is the valid name (senior subjective synonym) for Thenus indicus Leach, 1815, the type species of Thenus Leach, 1815 (Decapoda). Entry on the Official List of Specific Names in Zoology emended to record that it is ruled under the plenary power that all previous type fixations are set aside and specimen NHMW Inv.
