Dr Douglas Yanega

 

Douglas Yanega is the Senior Museum Scientist of the Entomology Research Museum, University of California, Riverside, one of the larger University-based insect collections in North America (~ 3 million specimens).

Doug received his Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University in 1983, and his PhD in Entomology from the University of Kansas in 1991 under Charles D. Michener. He later worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Illinois Natural History Survey, and then took a position as a Visiting Researcher at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, before taking the position at UC Riverside in 1999.

His research interests include: the evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology of Hymenoptera, particularly bees (behavioral interactions and social control mechanisms, behavioral flexibility and phenotypic plasticity, evolution of sociality, sex ratio theory, demographic analysis and computer modeling); the systematics of "short-tongued" bees, especially augochlorine halictids and panurgine andrenids; biogeography and faunistic analyses of bees; pollination ecology, especially plant-pollinator interactions; biological databases, wikis, and computer-assisted taxonomic guides and authority files; conservation biology and biodiversity of terrestrial insects; biology of parasitic insects, esp. cleptoparasitic Hymenoptera; mimicry and related phenomena, including insect defense mechanisms. He has authored over 35 works, primarily on insect biology or systematics (Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Neuroptera), including a field guide to Cerambycid beetles.

Doug is an extremely active participant in various networks, listservs, and other community-based efforts involving communication among scientists (e.g., Entomological Collections Network, Taxacom, Entomo-l), or providing scientific information to the public (e.g. , Chicago Reader "Straight Dope", Allexperts.com, Wikipedia).
