Professor
Daphne G. Fautin

Overview:
Daphne’s research centers on sea anemones
(Actiniaria), including their reproduction, taxonomy, and phylogeny. Research
on symbioses of cnidarians has involved her with fishes, crustaceans,
and dinoflagellates, as well. The spatial extent of her
research is from the poles to the tropics and from the sea surface
to the abyss. Her funding from the US National Science
Foundation has included grants in the programs Partnerships for
Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) and Assembling the Tree
of Life. A major aspect of her research has been building
a database that focuses on taxonomy and biogeography of hexacorals
(http://hercules.kgs.ku.edu/
Hexacoral/Anemone2/).
Summary of Research & Education:
Daphne received her Ph.D. degree in 1972 from
the Department of Zoology, University of California, Berkeley. After
a year at the University of Hawaii (Honolulu) and two at the
University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur), she joined the California
Academy of Sciences (San Francisco). There she was a Curator
in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology, and Director
of Research. She moved in 1990 to the University of Kansas
(Lawrence). Daphne has served as Treasurer of the International
Society for Reef Studies, Chair of the Division of Invertebrate
Zoology of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology
(formerly the American Society of Zoologists), and Chair of the
US National Committee of the Census of Marine Life; she chaired
the Organizing Committee for the 7th International Conference
on Coelenterate Biology, which was held in 2003. She is
a member of the International Committee of the Ocean Biogeographic
Information System (OBIS), a subject editor for Zootaxa, and
a vice chair of the Science Committee of the Global Biodiversity
Information Facility (GBIF).
